TextEdit User Guide

In Lion, TextEdit used to open with a blank file by default. On Mountain Lion, it launches with a file picker by default — either for choosing to store the file in iCloud or for opening a local fi.

From one of our websites, I have exported a CSV text file which seems to be encoded as 'Windows Latin 1' in Textedit jargon. When I set Textedit to open the file with that character encoding, all is fine; however, I cannot save it to 'Mac OS Roman' encoding. Open TextEdit for me. Open the TextEdit app on your Mac. Note: New TextEdit documents are in rich text format by default. To have new documents created in plain text instead, set new document settings in TextEdit preferences. If the TextEdit dialog appears, you have iCloud Drive turned on. I'm using something called Disk Inventory X and it's showing that TextEdit.app is taking up 36.9 GB of space, and with over 200,000 files. When I look in the Applications folder, it only weighs in at 6.4 MB, which seem about right for such a simple app. Disk Inventory correctly showed that Chrome was taking almost 12 GB of space (yikes!) so I dumped it.

You can use TextEdit to edit or display HTML documents as you'd see them in a browser (images may not appear), or in code-editing mode.

Note: By default, curly quotes and em dashes are substituted for straight quotes and hyphens when editing HTML as formatted text. (Code-editing mode uses straight quotes and hyphens.) To learn how to change this preference, see New Document options.
